Lawyers Call For Fairness For Simpson

After weeks of wrangling over evidence, prosecutors and lawyers for O. J. Simpson were in rare agreement today, telling a court that Mr. Simpson's right to a fair trial could be compromised by the disclosure of crime-scene photographs and transcripts of meetings held in the privacy of a judge's chambers. They were responding to a motion filed by news organizations that seeks access to such transcripts and to photographs of the bodies of the two people Mr. Simpson is accused of killing: his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald L. Goldman.

Readers of the Serbian press and viewers of pro-Government television may be forgiven if they feel a bit dizzy. For the last three years, reporters and commentators in Belgrade have been steadily beating the pan-Serbia propaganda drum. They have portrayed the Bosnian Serb cause as a glorious crusade and have elevated its leaders to near-mythic heroes. Criticism of the cause, its leaders or their tactics was considered virtual treason.

EARNINGS DISAPPOINTMENT HITS BRITISH AIRWAYS

The American depository receipts of British Airways P.L.C. fell $2.25, to $64.375, on the New York Stock Exchange after the airline said first-quarter earnings were hindered by losses at its alliance partners, USAir Group and Qantas Airways. British Airways reported a 39 percent rise in pretax profit, to $:88 million, or $136 million, in the three months that ended on June 30, compared with $:63 million for the corresponding period last year. The company said earnings were helped by a 12 percent increase in business- and first-class passenger traffic. But the company also said that its two partners had a loss of $:5 million in the first quarter, compared with a loss of $:3 million in the comparable period last year.

SERVICE CORPORATION BUYS CREMATORIUM OPERATOR

Great Southern Group P.L.C., Britain's largest crematorium operator, said yesterday that it had accepted an increased offer by Service Corporation International, valuing the company at $:112.9 million, or $174 million. Great Southern is controlled by a family trust, J. D. Field & Sons Ltd., which holds 56 percent of the publicly traded shares. Field & Sons, which previously said Service Corporation's offer of 680 pence a share was not enough to buy the 87-year-old company, has pledged to sell its stake. Service Corporation, based in Houston, is the world's largest funeral home company.

Cisco Systems Inc. yesterday acquired closely held Newport Systems Solutions for about 4.2 million shares of common stock valued at $90.8 million, completing a merger announced on July 12. Cisco, based in San Jose, Calif., said the acquisition would bolster its growth in the market for software linking computer networks. Newport Systems, of Newport Beach, Calif., sells the LAN2LAN product line, a best-selling system for desktop local area networks. The purchase price was based on yesterday's closing price for Cisco shares, which rose 75 cents, to $21.625, in Nasdaq trading.

Royal Oak Raises Bid To Buy Lac

Royal Oak Mines Inc. said today that it had increased its cash-and-share bid for Lac Minerals Ltd. by 21.4 percent, to $1.73 billion. The higher offer came hours before Lac's board recommended that shareholders reject a competing bid from the Toronto-based American Barrick Resources Corporation, and one day before Royal Oak's original offer, valued at $1.47 billion at Friday's closing stock prices, was to expire.

WHITTLE SAID TO AGREE TO SALE OF SCHOOL CHANNEL

Whittle Communications L.P. has reached a tentative agreement to sell its in-school television channel to K-III Communications for $300 million, according to a person close to the transaction. Whittle's board has reacted favorably to the K-III bid for the Channel One Network, the person said. The agreement was first reported yesterday by The Wall Street Journal.
