BERLIN IS ASTONISHED.; Startled by News That $3,000,000 In Gold Is Coming from New York.

BERLIN, May 17. -- News that $3,000,000 in gold has been engaged in New York for Germany causes some astonishment here, because the price of exchange makes it impossible for Berlin's bankers to import American gold at a profit; the statement cabled from the United States that part of the gold engaged this week for Paris is for the German account meets with a decided denial from Berlin financiers.

WASHINGTON, May 16. -- A sharp altercation between Speaker Cannon and Representative J. Wesley Gaines to-day ended with the Speaker ordering the stenographer to strike from the record the remarks of the Representative from Tennessee. The incident occurred after the Speaker had been trying for fifteen minutes to induce "the gentlemen to cease conversation."

Steinmetz, consulting engineer of the General Electric Company at Schenectady and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Union College, painted a doleful picture yesterday afternoon of what life will be in the world when the coal supply has been exhausted, when the natural fertility of the soil has been used up, and when the population has largely increased.
