Dissident Soviet sources rept on Nov 26 that dissident mathematician Y A Shikhanovich, who formerly taught at Moscow Univ, went on trial in absentia and was ordered committed indefinetely to mental hosp; Shikhanovich, who was held incommunicado for 14 mos, was judged not mentally competent to face formal charges of having distributed anti-Soviet literature; hearing marks latest stage of crackdown by secret police against once active clandestine journal The Chronicle of Current Events; Shikhanovich's lawyer Y Raznikov was not allowed to meet him, and her request that trial be postponed until she is able to see him is turned down by judge; Shikhanovich's wife Alevtina is allowed in courtroom but several other supporters and foreign newsmen are kept outside of bldg; dissident physicist A D Sakharov remarks to police, who barred entrance to bldg, that they are waging 'cold war against correspondents,' alluding to freezing temperature; repts that Shikhanovicb had undergone psychiatric examination after 9 mos in prison; says drs held that he 'retained' his intellectual faculties but suffered from possible slowly developing schizophrenia; Shikhanovich's friends rept that only Y Yukhnovets, unskilled worker who had been jailed for dissident activities and subsequently released, testified against witness; prosecution also reptdly quoted statements from 2 former dissidents I Belogorodskaya and P Yakir implicating Shikhanovich in distribution of anti-Soviet material; in related incident, it is disclosed that dissident historian A A Amalrik expects to serve his 3-yr sentence in prison camp in Magadan region of Soviet Far East; prominent dissident P Litvinov, grandson of former Soviet Foreign Min M Litvinov, says he has talked with Amalrik about sentence; notes that Amalrik's sentence was reduced after 117-day hunger strike during which he had to be force-fed

ABC bows to Ind Judge R R Brown's ruling and agrees to black out controversial section of TV documentary on flammable materials scheduled to be seen nationwide on Nov 26; Smith Mfg Co, mfr of plastic crib which is ignited during controversial segment, sought injunction on grounds that it distorted facts and was prejudicial to concern's reputation; argue that shortened version of 10-min test into 43 secs was unfair, and rept J C Penney Co and B Altman stores withdrew crib from sale after preview; ABS spokesmen say they will carry case to Sup Ct if necessary and hope to show complete documentary 'Fire!' some time in future; feel Brown's decision is case of 'prior restraint'; Brown's jurisdiction as Jackson County Circuit Ct Judge over nationally televised program has also been questioned
