In a market which crossed the 2,000,000-share mark for the sixth time in October, yesterday's movement on the New York Stock Exchange was extremely irregular, but with the general run of active stocks moving toward lower levels. The principal industrial stocks were under pressure a good part of the day, but a recovery just before the close lifted many issues well above the low levels touched in the earlier trading.

A widespread selling movement developed in the final hour of trading in the New York Stock Exchange yesterday with the result that many substantial gains recorded earlier in the day were turned into sharp losses. The selling, which was most active in the stocks that had shown strength in the morning, appeared to come in some measure from holders who had accepted the advice of commission houses to take advantage of all rallies.
