Ehrlichman Is Sentenced To 20 Months to 5 Years; Ehrlichman Sentenced by Gessell To a 20-Month to 5-Year Term

John D Ehrlichman on July 31 is sentenced to 20 mos to 5 yrs in prison for his role in what Judge Gerhard A Gesell calls 'shameful episode in the history of this country'; before sentencing Ehrlichman tells ct that he is innocent of all charges in case; co-defendant G Gordon Liddy receives 1-to-3 yr sentence to be served concurrently with his present sentence of 6 yrs and 8 mos to 20 yrs; Bernard L Barker and Eugenio R Martinez, convicted of conspiracy, are given suspended sentences; Gesell says they were duped by high Govt officials and have been sufficiently punished; Ehrlichman, outside courthouse, says people who are in Govt are constantly required to balance rights of individual against rights of nation as whole; notes that Gesell said that this issue could not be raised and it is his view that this is error; illus of Barker and Martinez with atty Daniel Schultz; illus of Ehrlichman (L)
