Friederike Victoria "Joy" Adamson (née Gessner; 20 January 1910 – 3 January 1980) was a naturalist, artist and author. Her book, Born Free, describes her experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa. Born Free was printed in several languages and made into an Academy Award–winning movie of the same name. In 1977, she was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art.

LONDON, Jan. 21 -- A chorus of Jubilation arises from the Conservative journals this morning. The Dally Telegraph says With one splendid blow the counties have changed the whole situation in a way which promises to smash the hopes of the radical coalition to pieces and to leave the Government, at the best, utterly dependent upon the Irish and Socialist vote and confronted by an adverse majority of the British people.

One energetic floor trader who has the reputation of being able to pick out the weak spots in the market further ahead than most of his fellows argued to himself yesterday morning that there was a pool in Chesapeake Ohio, and that pools were in troublous waters these days, with the chances in favor of any trader who might go for a stock handled by a pool.

A sharp rise in American issues in the London market, influenced in part, doubtless, by the further reduction in the discount rate of the English bank, a fair volume of investment purchases here and extensive short covering brought about a sharp recovery in prices on the Stock Exchange yesterday from the depressed levels of the previous day.

Wheat, after hesitation early, developed a strong rallying tendency, advancing 1 1/4 to 1 1/2o from the low point, closing with some reaction from the top. Cables were weak, which caused selling early, and the Western receipts were heavy. The Price Current report was favorable on the appearance of the growing crop, while the development of further financial trouble in Wall Street brought further selling by bearish interests.
